Hollyhocks is an attractive ground floor apartment, fully furnished and situated in a very quiet spot with its own small private garden and barbecue area. The property offers a perfect holiday retreat for couples, families or groups of up to five guests plus well behaved dogs.

Accommodation:

Access Statement: Although Hollyhocks is a ground floor apartment there is a gravel path with an incline towards the rear of Colmer House. The apartment has one step down into the hall and one step into each bedroom. To use the shower there is a step over into the bath that has hand grips but no hand rails on the walls.

In the unlikely event of a fire we recommend that the bedrooms windows are used as a means of escape if access to the main door exit is not possible. If there is a power failure emergency torches are located in each room.

The History of Hollyhocks apartment:

Hollyhocks is a privately owned holiday home on the Colmer Estate, a converted working timber mill and former Georgian mansion. In the 19th and early 20th centuries Colmer Estate was an important timber mill.  The Colmer Stream, which still flows through the estate filled the mill pond (now the location of the indoor pool) and this fed the waterwheel powering the saw mill. The stream then continued on through an underground channel back to the lake. Once the timber mill closed the estate its buildings became derelict until 1985. During 1985-1998 the estate underwent conversions into 20 holiday homes creating 7 apartments in the main house and 13 in the old mill buildings, the creation of indoor and outdoor swim pools, an all weather tennis court and children’s play area in the old walled gardens.

Colmer Estate has 28 acres of beautiful, managed but natural private grounds. This hidden South Hams gem is a nature lover’s paradise with a combination of meadows, lake, trails and streams. The estate attracts a huge variety of wildlife including birds, butterflies, dragonflies, foxes, badgers, squirrels, rabbits, deer and bats that roost in the roof of the gym.

The Colmer Estate is a 15 min drive from the beach, 20 mins from Salcombe and 10 mins to the edge of Dartmoor.

The name of the immediate area of California Cross was given to Brownston Cross in the 1840’s as it became the main route for people travelling to sail from Plymouth to the America for the California gold rush.

The local pub The California Inn and Spar shop are only a few minutes stroll up driveway and lane. The Ringfeeder farm shop and cafe is just a 3 minute drive, where you can purchase fresh daily produce including their own farm milk, bread and pastries plus farm eggs. The cafe serves a very good breakfast and lunch using local ingredients. Grocery deliveries can be ordered online from Waitrose, Sainsburys, Tesco, Morrisons or Asda.
